Unfortunately, I’ve had to give some advice to a few players recently on how to manage turf wars between regional kicking war lords. Dive deep enough into any niche and you’re going to find a landscape that looks more like the Sopranos than football.
Anyway, here are a few practical tips on how to navigate these testy rivalries:
Thank - Begin by thanking your coach for their guidance and support, and expressing your appreciation for the training they have provided you thus far.
Explain - Explain that while you have greatly benefited from their coaching, you have decided to seek additional training in a specific area to help you reach your full potential. Elaborate on the specific area you wish to improve upon and how you believe additional coaching will help you achieve that goal.
Emphasize - Emphasize that you value both coaches' unique strengths and would like to continue to work with both of them in tandem. Explain that each coach can provide you with a different perspective and skill set that will benefit your overall growth as a kicker.
Professionalism - Keep in mind that some coaches may not take this news well, despite your efforts to be respectful and appreciative. Be prepared to handle any negative reactions with grace and professionalism.
Impartiality - Additionally, it's important to remain impartial in any potential rivalries between your coaches. Remember that your ultimate goal is to succeed as a kicker and to build a strong network of college coaches who can help you achieve that goal. Avoid getting caught up in any "kicking wars" between rival coaches and instead focus on your own development and progress.
Guides - Lastly, consider reaching out to another neutral coach or parent for advice on how to approach the situation and to maintain a positive relationship moving forward. Communication and honesty are key in any coach-athlete relationship.
Navigating egos and rivalries isn’t just a football thing, it’s a life thing. The important thing to remember, whether you work with one coach or many, is that you remain above the fray and keep your end goals in mind.
