Kicking coaches’ entire business models revolve around associating themselves with talented players, maybe like you or you son.
College coaches then use these kicking coaches as conduits through which to communicate with this talent, and, when this kicker commits to a famous brand name college, this kicking coach is tagged dutifully in their commitment tweet which will drive more kids their way.
But, what if you work with more than one coach? It’s bound to happen. There’s just too many of us crazy kicking coaches around.
You might have one coach you really liked on technique who didn’t help you connect with college coaches much, and other coaches who really weren’t there for your technique but were great at helping connect to college coaches.
Coach A sees you at Coach B’s event on Twitter.
Coach A texts you something passive aggressive that even a Middle School girl would approve of like some cryptic “🤔” faces along with a screen shot of the tweet you were tagged in, or “When were you going to tell me you were seeing another coach?”
It’s kind of like your girl friend accusing you of cheating on her, except maybe worse, because usually it’s coming from a supposed adult, male, who you believe has the keys to helping you play college football somehow.
So, what to do?
Understand this guy needs you more than you need them.
Whatever college connection you’ve gotten you’ve probably gotten 98% on your own anyway without you knowing it.
The only thing kicking coaches - or any coach - can be good for is an initial referral through to a college coach looking for kickers.
After that, there is zero they can do to help along your recruiting other than the occasional follow up text.
If, after a referral their way, a college coach isn’t pursuing you, 80% of the time it is not going to happen.
You can also play regional coaches off of one another if you like.
They all want one thing: some (or the nuttier ones, want all) credit for your success when you commit (at least visually).
You can usually lull most of these regional kicking war lords to sleep by continuing to tag them in your stuff even if you’re not really working with them anymore.
Kicking is a weird, world but if you understand some of the power dynamics behind it, you can at least prepare yourself for the eventual hiccup when a coach’s jealously bug bites.
That’s all for now, thanks for stopping by.
