For kickers, anyway, long gone are the days of coaches finding you. You now need to go seek them out. The easiest way to do this are the following three tasks. Done enough times, they will hopefully create enough positive momentum in your favor to kick start what I call The Recruiting Flywheel™ (below):

  • No Contact: Fill out enough recruiting questionnaires, emails and Twitter DM’s to get a coach interested.

  • Indirect Contact: Coach decides to get in touch indirectly via Twitter/email. Player creates enough positive momentum to bring this conversation into real-time with…

  • Direct Contact: Coaches regularly hop on FaceTime, phone calls or have in person visits with the player and respond regularly to communications. Player then leverages this interest enough into..

  • Offer: Whether PWO or scholarship, a player garners enough attention to knock loose an offer. This interest from one school is then leveraged to create interest from other schools (thus restarting the Recruiting Flywheel)

This article is about exactly how to move from the No Contact to Indirect Contact phase of your Recruiting Flywheel.

Recruiting Questionnaires

You don’t exist as a data point to college teams until you’ve filled out their recruiting questionnaires which, for DIII - FCS are public facing and available on their football team websites (usually under “recruiting”)

It is tedious, boring and repetitive but it is the easiest way to short cut what coaches will usually say if you make contact on Twitter: “Thanks for connecting. Fill out our recruiting questionnaire and we’ll get back to you.”

Now, you get to say, “Thanks so much coach, I already have and look forward to next steps.”

Twitter DM’ing

Despite being the app that will bring the eventual downfall of humanity, Twitter is also where college recruiting leads start from.

Find, follow and, when able to, DM the recruiting coordinator, position coach and regional recruiter for your area.

If you want to know exactly what to say, check out my ebook How To Kick In College for complete scripts and so on.

Emailing

Some coaches prefer email to Twitter - especially the Ivy, NESCAC, Patriot and high academic league schools. Perhaps, because their recruiting pool is so much smaller than most schools their communications are usually quicker than regular college or state schools.

Summing It Up

The holy trinity of recruiting:

  • Recruiting questionnaires

  • Twitter finding, following and DM’ing

  • Emailing

  • Do this enough times to create a critical mass of interest that will move you from the No Contact phase of your recruiting into the Indirect Contact phase and beyond.

That’s all for now,

Brendan
